Sumatran Tiger

Sumatran Tiger

Australian and NZ zoos are engaged in the very valuable task of maintaining a viable captive population of Sumatran tigers. This is the smallest subspecies of tiger and the only one left in Indonesia now the Javan and Bali subspecies are extinct.

This tiger is from Auckland Zoo in NZ. It's not my first preference to photograph such animals in zoos, but for the Sumatran, it's very challenging to photograph them in the wild. Sadly numbers have been in a largely inexorable decline as conditions are far from optimal in Sumatra for their survival. I'm not optimistic about the long-term prospects of this subspecies.
