Kia Ora- I'm a zoologist, conservationist and photographer, based in New Zealand.

I think it's the usual mix of hard-work, opportunity, luck and sacrifice :) A high tolerance for personal discomfort also helps. If you're the sort of person who baulks say, at having to shake cockroaches out of your bedding in some jungle-area, it's probably not going to appeal :)
